SEO is the abbreviation for: “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users.
When picking a project to work on, there are several ways to go about it. The most important aspect of building websites is the fact that many people choose keywords that they know nothing about. If you don't know anything about the subject, then you probably won't enjoy what you are working on. If you can pick a topic that you enjoy, believe me, it will make the tedious work go by so much easier and faster.
Picking keywords is one thing, but making those keywords profitable is another. Take for example, the word dog. It has a huge amount of searches because there are so many types of dogs. So how do we go about finding a keyword that makes money? Well, what you want to find is a high searched keyword with little or no competition. One of the most searched keywords related to dog that has a moderate amount of competition is Yorkie. It has a huge amount of searches and a modest amount of competition. But, just coming up with the keyword is not going to make you successful. You need to find a domain name with that keyword in it with as few other letters as possible, to keep the keyword density as high as possible.
These keywords that are profitable are also known as niches. It is best to find your own niche that interests you and you have knowledge about. You are more likely to have an idea of what people are looking for on the Internet when you have knowledge about the subject at hand. Without general knowledge of the subject, how are you going to provide original content on the internet? The days of copy and paste are gone. You may not be penalized by Google, but you definitely will not rank high if you use duplicated content.
Picking a keyword that you don't have a clue as to the meaning is not the end to all ends. Often more so than not, I will just run a keyword search with that very word. Keywords will vary so you will want to get as close to the exact search term as possible. For instance you may not know a thing about Russellville AR but when you run that keyword for similar or what we call niche keywords through your search tool, you will quickly find that it is a town in Arkansas and goes by the term River Valley. Now, I don't know about you, but I definitely know what a town is and to search further will show you business websites in that town. A quick search on the internet and it won't be long until you have more information than you could imagine on the subject.
I can remember the days and nights of doing keyword research and domain searches along with competition data and I would move at such a frantic rate that I would go from one topic to the next, and then I would need to go back and reference something from an hour earlier, so I would just print screen after screen and after a couple of days of this my desk would be just covered in printed paper on anything you could imagine. So when I would wake up in the morning, I was used to going ahead and changing my printer ink before I started my day, and then by late in the evening I knew when to quit was when I ran out of printer ink. When you are tired and cross eyed from looking into a computer screen all day, the last thing that you want to do is change out your printer cartridges. So I usually just quit for the day.
Being organized with your work will only benefit you in the long run. One of the very first things you need to do with any research or website development is to get yourself and your files organized. The longer you work on various tasks, the more the need for files and links with usernames and passwords to be stored for easy reference. With an ever evolving digital age, the need for piles of printed paper are over. Your computer files should be in an order that you can remember. Picture if you will, what your email and its folders are organized like, and make your computer similar to that.
SEO has traditionally benn divided into two main
areas; on-page optimization which covers what can be done on the pages of the
website itself, and off-page optimization which covers activity that takes place
elsewhere (e.g. link-building).
The best effective strategy currently however (social media powered SEO) requires an integrated approach, with on-page content promoted off-page within the main social media channels.
Finally, if you are more interested in on-page SEO, we should probably warn you that, although it’s still very important to optimize on-page factors, it’s extremely unlikely to work on its own unless your market is particularly niche.
